Dennis Helfer along with Elaine Helfer were the parents of Helfer when she was born. Her parents are from German as well as English descendance. She studied at the William E. Hay Composite High School of Stettler situated in Alberta. The three sisters she lives with lived on the family's wheat farm. At age 17 a modeling scout of an agency came across Helfer when he was waiting in line to enter a movie.
